Without a doubt, some of the most interesting places are those that are on the roads less traveled. These photographs attempt to tell the story of those places but can never replace those actual pieces of history experienced in person.

I would have ideally liked to do a square book for this project but, most of my pictures are rectangular instead of square so I think the Large Landscape book will work better. I would like to work with premium paper on this book as well and make it a hard back book. It will definitely have text so I can tell the story of these pictures, the font will probably look like a font of a handwriting style. I am still debating whether I want to do a purely black and white book, only color, or both. The print standards look like they may only do one or the other. I want the book to look nostalgic but some of the colored pictures are really beautiful as well. I would appreciate any feedback ..thanks.

  1. The black and white photos don't work as well as the color photos, they come across very dull so I'd suggest stick with colors. Of the color photos the only one that isn't working is this first one. It's too closely cropped which makes the image look to busy and feels like its missing some of the context of the photo on the sides.
The wagon infront of a shop (may 23) works great compositionally. It's framed in a unique way that gives it more life than the others. The downtown Andalusia picture also does a good job of contextually showing the area you've visited. I suggest using lots of wide expansive shots to show the general area and then many close up shots of details in the area. By the way your html on your Imagine Theater picture is messing up.

  2. I enjoy the color photos as well. I'm not sure the black and white is necessary. The monument photo with the flags looks like it might have been a tourist shot, although a good picture, it's the only one that stood out to me. I think you've got a great idea here and it will be good to see how you might expand on it with more pictures. Your pictures do have a common personality though which you have been able to reproduce so it's good to be able to produce pictures that are consistent with your style.

  3. These images are much stronger than your last. It might be something to do with that red bricking... I don't know but so far they all work for me besides the black and white images because those images don't appear as vivid or vibrant as the others. Also the Images of the sign with the flag in Milton and the monument image are not so strong because I feel like any person visiting the area would typically take a photo of a public monument.
However, the ones working for me are the images of building with old surfaces that are worn.

  4. Your concept is really strong and your images make me want to visit the places your are photographing. The images of buildings and architecture are stronger for me. The strongest image this week is the second one. The colors and lines in the photo work nicely.
The weakest image this week is first one. It is cropped strangely and there is too much greenery. I want to see more of the brick wall.

  5. All around this is a pretty successful set of photos. Very strong concept that is being supported by a very strong set of pictures so far.I like number 1 and number 7 the best. They have a very interesting subject matter to me.

The second one is OK, I like the colors, and it is well taken but I find the images with more space to be interesting.

  6. This is a great topic of documenting life around the Panhandle. B&W is a good effect yet, I don't think it works unless you shot the whole project in it. This remind of a post cards, which is a good thing. I think the photos need to be desaturated some. They looks a bit over processed. Also watch your framing, a little piece of the door is cut off.

  7. Really feeling the doors. Is there a reason you chose to focus on doors? The variety is really astounding. Maybe a bit more space around the Mason’s door. Then they would be great and thematic.

The memorial shot is sort of generic. There are so many memorials around the country and they all sort of resemble the one you took a picture of. Your statement says you want to photograph things off the beaten path, well this isn’t. The rest are. And I like doors. Run with that.

  8. This is a nice start, and I do believe that by the time we get to the end of this we will have some gorgeous images to choose from. Watch your cropping as alot of them are tight. Air is good and you can always crop later. Color for sure!

    Keep going!
